Agency Profile
The New River Valley Agency on Aging is dedicated
to advocating for the aging population by maximizing at-home
services, linking seniors and their caregivers to resources and
information, and providing community education on aging-related
issues. The New River Valley Agency on Aging strives to support and
enhance the lives of older adults, their families, and caregivers
through community partnerships, systems advocacy, and
community-based support. The Agency is committed to finding more
efficient and effective ways to respond to the needs of older adults
and caregivers in the New River Valley.
The New River Valley Agency on Aging has been serving citizens in
the Counties of Giles, Floyd, Montgomery, Pulaski, and the City of
Radford, and the Towns of Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Pulaski
since 1975. The Agency is governed by a Board of Directors appointed
by local governments and operates as a governmental cooperative. The
eight local governments in our service areas help support our
efforts by providing some funding for our programs. The greatest
portion of our funding comes from the federal level through the
Older Americans Act. We also receive funds from the Virginia General
Assembly, grants, contributions, and fees. Our federal and state
funds are distributed through the Virginia Department for the Aging.
The United States Census Bureau projects an explosive growth in the
older adult population over the next three decades. The Commonwealth
of Virginia and the New River Valley is and will continue to
experience this growth. Along with the growth comes the challenge to
meet the increased need for information and services. The New River
Valley Agency on Aging strives to build community partnerships that
will enable older persons to live in their communities with dignity
and age successfully in place.
